Royal Museums Greenwich
Four distinct venues, one cohesive online visitor experience
The Client

Royal Museums Greenwich is home to the Royal Observatory, the iconic historic sailing ship Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Queen's House art gallery. It is dedicated to enriching people's understanding of the sea, the exploration of space and Britain's role in world history.
The Challenge
Royal Museums Greenwich wanted to transform their website into a high-impact compelling experience. Inspiring visitors to visit their group of world-class museums and drive income generation.
Their site had become outdated, causing issues with user experience and satisfaction. There were also accessibility issues due to the site layout.
They wanted their site to deepen audience engagement with their specialist themes. Giving them insight into the 'sea and ships', 'astronomy and time' and the 'visual arts'.
The Solution
Royal Museums Greenwich wanted a bold and innovative look and feel. We used large images on every page and implemented a striking tile-based layout on key landing pages. To transform the usability of the site we also added a mobile first menu across all devices.
One of the aims of this project was to integrate five separate systems within the new site. Including a shop, collections and prints database. As well as importing this information, we tagged 'related items' to editorial content. Showing visitors related collection items, prints and merchandise below articles.
We launched the site in November 2015. Since this time commercial activity has seen a rapid increase. With ticket and shop sales rising.
